New cafeteria for the comprehensive school “An der Berkel” in the city of Vreden

In planning the project, the city of Vreden (North Rhine-Westphalia) placed great emphasis on circular construction. A life cycle analysis was carried out to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the building method. As a result, reinforced concrete components are being replaced—where technically feasible—by concrete containing the highest possible proportion of recycled material.

The new cafeteria for the secondary school “An der Berkel” is part of a comprehensive modernization program by the city of Vreden. The project includes the construction of a cafeteria with specialist classrooms as well as a double and triple sports hall. The focus is on sustainability, particularly through the use of recycled concrete. The cafeteria is designed not only as a place for meals but also as a central meeting point for the school community.

The building is being constructed according to modern standards, featuring elements such as a green roof and potentially photovoltaic systems. It forms part of a larger investment in the city’s educational infrastructure.

The foundation stone was laid on May 24, 2024, with a time capsule containing contemporary documents and objects placed in the foundation — symbolizing the project’s importance for the future development of both the school and the city.
