RiBa - Recycling in Use

Applying recycling in construction: A contribution to more circular economy in construction.

The EU's 2050 climate neutrality targets are also tightening the sustainability assessment of buildings and building products in Germany and Austria. As a result of the Green Deal, the European Buildings Directive and the EU Taxonomy Regulation, more use must be made of circular economy products. However, the use of recycled solid building materials in building construction is still rarely implemented in the project regions, mainly due to legal uncertainties and lack of information and experience of building professionals.

Recycling in the construction industry: A contribution towards a more circular economy in construction.

The EU’s climate targets for 2050 have significantly tightened the requirements for sustainable construction in Germany and Austria in recent years. The Green Deal, the European Buildings Directive and the EU Taxonomy Regulation call for increased use of circular economy products. However, recycled solid building materials have so far been used only rarely in building construction – primarily because of legal uncertainties and a lack of information and practical experience among those in the construction industry.

The project addressed this issue with a cross-border approach: Together with partners from Upper Bavaria, Salzburg, Upper Austria, Vorarlberg and Swabia, the legal regulations and normative frameworks in the project regions were analysed to identify specific barriers to the use of recycled solid building materials. On this basis, practical tools were developed to support tradespeople, planners and building owners in using recycled building materials in building construction.

At the heart of the project’s findings is the Recycling Toolbox, which has been made available to the target group for use in their day-to-day work. It includes recycled concrete in the Baubook building materials catalogue and a recycling innovation map (zukunft-bau.at), both of which facilitate the use of recycled concrete.

In addition, training courses, seminars and information events were held for multipliers and the building trade.
