EDGE Südkreuz Berlin
EDGE Südkreuz Berlin is an innovative seven-story office complex constructed using a modular timber-hybrid design. It consists of two standalone buildings and, with a total area of 32,000 square meters, is the largest timber-hybrid building in Germany by floor space. Compared to conventional construction methods, the CO₂ emissions were significantly reduced. Key features include the use of FSC-certified wood, recyclable materials following the Cradle-to-Cradle principle, and comprehensive material documentation in the Madaster database. The building takes a holistic approach to environmentally conscious and energy-efficient usage, offering a future-oriented energy supply through an intelligent ventilation system and a combined heat and power (CHP) plant.

The construction of EDGE Südkreuz focused on reducing the building's carbon footprint and overall weight. By using modular timber-concrete ceiling elements and 3,500 m³ of FSC-certified spruce wood, not only was the structural weight minimized, but the indoor climate was also positively influenced. The materials were carefully selected to reduce environmental impact while also allowing for more compact structural elements.
The load-bearing structure consists of a combination of timber-concrete ceiling panels supported by glued laminated timber façade columns. The walls are made from multi-box wall elements. This sustainable design makes the building not only more environmentally friendly but also ensures efficient use of interior space.
Distinctive design features include a seven-meter-high atrium that creates an exceptionally open and bright atmosphere. The so-called "trees" – four walkable platforms at different heights – add a unique spatial experience.
The building is designed for maximum efficiency: an intelligent ventilation system regulates the indoor climate, and occupants can individually adjust the temperature in their offices or meeting rooms via a smartphone app. In summer, the system ensures that indoor temperatures never exceed 26°C. The building meets the WELL certification requirements, which set high standards for user wellbeing.
In addition, a CHP plant located in the basement provides a sustainable energy supply by generating both electricity and heat. It operates independently of the city’s district heating network, which is still partially coal-powered. In doing so, EDGE Südkreuz completes the vision of a modern, environmentally conscious office building that meets the needs of an increasingly digital and sustainability-driven working world.
