In 2008, the 6-story Institute for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs was built for all laboratory units of the Carinthian provincial government with 118 laboratory workstations and more than 15,000 m². The lowest floors are naturally lit by a light trench, and the beveling of the front side takes into account the immediately adjacent residential buildings, which are all detached houses.

A well planned energy concept ensures that the best possible indoor climate is achieved with the lowest possible primary energy consumption and the least possible use of technology. By activating the concrete ceilings in the new offices and laboratories, the premises are cooled in summer using the existing groundwater. In the winter months, the same system ensures the basic heating load. Furthermore, two thirds of the necessary heating capacity is covered by a groundwater heat pump. The necessary remaining heating capacity is covered by the district heating network of the city of Klagenfurt. On the south side of the institute, a photovoltaic system of about 100 m² was integrated into the façade system. The electricity generated by solar power is fed back into the power grid of the energy supplier.
