New Sports and Event Hall in Argenbühl

A sustainable, energy-efficient low-tech concept was developed for the new building. Heat losses are minimized primarily through a highly insulated building envelope, while a central ventilation system with highly efficient heat recovery supports the natural ventilation. Base load heating is supplied by a geothermal system. Powered by a €605,000 photovoltaic array, a heat pump ensures the hall’s energy-efficient operation and also provides free cooling during the summer. The selection of materials further enhances the building's ecological footprint: low-emission materials were specified for both interior and exterior areas. Nearly all concrete elements utilize recycled concrete combined with low-carbon cement, substantially cutting the structure's greenhouse gas emissions. This approach is complemented by unfired clay bricks on the facade, which offer a low environmental impact due to their minimal embodied energy. The core construction budget for the building is set at €11.3 million.

An interesting spatial feature of the design is its integration into the local topography: the ground-floor foyer anchors the building to the terrain on the north side, whereas the grandstand and multipurpose room on the upper floor open directly at ground level to the exterior on the south.
